Part of a department store, the Colosseum Warehouse exhibited Edison's Kinetoscope – a peep-show like precursor to cinema – in 1895. The success of this led to it later being used as a full time cinema from 1896, with the films described as 'full of life ... the following realistic scenes may be seen .... the English Channel at Dover, the Ostend Steamer, scenes of everyday life on the boulevards of Paris, a funny comedy called 'Two Strings to Her Bow', and the Czar in Paris. Admission 3d.'
