Famous as the site of Stan Laurel's stage debut, the Panopticon is the oldest music hall in the UK, and one of the most interesting cinemas as well. Opening as the Britannia Music Hall in 1857, it later became the Panopticon variety hall, also featuring a waxworks and zoo. Run by AE Pickard, it briefly became the Tron cinema – complete with a very non-fireproof wooden projection box! –before returning to the Panopticon name until it closed in 1938. Now being restored by the Friends of the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall.
